KOMODO

There are few words in English the evoke the thrill and possibly shudders of the word Komodo. Even those who don't know it is an island, or that it is part of Indonesia, still know the word, and what it means - dragons! The Komodo Dragon is the world's largest lizard, but that description does it little justice. Some other lizards grow nearly as long, and crocodiles and alligators are larger, but among reptiles it stands supreme, and holds it head high among tigers, lions, and others on the "feared predator" list of humans. However, all the stories, documentaries and travelers' tales can't compare with being on the island itself, and watching one of these prehistoric animals lumber by, tail swaying from side to side, head down and obviously unperturbed by any other living thing. But then to see it raise its head, sniff the breeze, and turn its eyes towards you brings out a primeval feeling few experience in today's world. In sharp contrast to the harsh world of these islands above water, the coral reefs spread through the Komodo National Park offer some of the best snorkeling and diving in the world.
