Day 1
– Home City/Gateway City/Bogota
Fly from your home city today to Bogota. On arrrival you are met and
transferred to your hotel. Most US airline’s flights arrive
mid to late evening (or very early in the morning); Avianca arrivies
early evening. But in all cases you will arrive at the hotel late
evening to after midnight, so you may want to have some extra food
along with you on the plane.
Day
2 - Bogota/Paujil Natural Reserve
After breakfast we drive to San Francisco Village to visit Jardin
Encantado Hummingbird House to see many species of hummingbirds, including
Gorgeted and White-bellied Woodstar, Lazuline Sabrewing and Indigo-capped
Hummingbird, just three of the twenty species that may be seen here.
It's a photographer's delight, and a birder's
joy, but everyone is taken with the color and movement of this wonderful
display. With our fill of hummingbirds and hummingbird photos (at
least for now) we drive to Puerto Boyacá village and Paujil
Natural Reserve in Quinchas Ridge. It’s a long drive , around
6-8 hours, but we’ll stop along the way to find birds such as
Blue and yellow Macaw and Horned Screamer, plus enjoy some wonderful
landscapes. We overnight for the next three nights in cabins inside
the humid tropical forest at the side of the Ermitano River.
Days
3 & 4 - Paujil Natural Reserve
We begin
our stay here walking different trails of the reserve searching some
interesting animals such as Magdalena Spider-monkey (an endemic species
and critically endangered), White-faced Capuchin and the enigmatic
and very rare Blue-billed Curassow (another endemic and also critically
endangered). W’ll also see some of the interesting insects that
inhabit these tropical forests. In the afternoon we transfer to La
Molla where we will try to fish some of the interesting fishes that
include the Caloche, Perro and Moino, and if we have good luck a Capaz
or maybe a Bocachico. This evening after dinner we will do our first
night spotlight, looking for a variety of animals from owls to frogs.
On the first night we’ll also put out food baits for the next
night’s outing.
Day
5 - Paujil Natural Reserve
This morning we take a long but leisurely walk to Caño
Cristal river, birding and mammaling along the way. In Caño
Cristal we can enjoy the natural “jacuzzis” formed in
the rocks of the river and the beautiful waterfall. Lunch is a riverside
picninc, and the return may be via the river if the water level is
low. Once again we will check our food baits, waiting quietly in the
forest for any animal as Kinkajou, Tayra, Coati, Pecari or others
to appear. We’ll also once again search for frogs and snakes
on the trails including the South American Bullfrog that is one of
the most largest frogs in Colombia.
Day
6 - Paujil Natural Reserve/Rio Claro Natural Reserve
We transfer
to Doradal and Rio Claro Natural Reserve, our home for the next three
nights. Once our gear is stowed we begin with our activities. We walk
the trails of the reserve enjoying all that the incredible Rio Claro
Canyon has to offer, visiting “El Templo del Tiempo”,
“La Playa de Marmol”, “La Playa del Manatial”
and “Boca del Caiman.” The canyon is mostly limestone,
resuting in wet caves with crystalline small rivers running through
them and dry caves with the expected cave ornaments, some karst formation
and the usually sparkling clear Rio Claro itself running through the
sourrounding rainforest. In addition to the geological formations
and structures we’ll be searching for some of the more than
seventy endemic plants of the canyon, plus of course the wildlife.
Lunch is taken at the Reserve restaurant then in the afternoon we
will visit “Las Dantas” where we can snorkel in the clear
water looking for aquatic fauna. Each night after of the dinner we
will be out spotlighting, searching for, among other things, owls
including the spectacular Spectacled Owl, Black and White Owl, Mottled
Owl and others.
Day 7
- Rio Claro Natural Reserve
This morning we visit an Oilbird cave, nocturnal birds related to
the nightjars that living inside the caves and eat fruit of the Oil
Palms and other oily seeds. It’s unique in its biology, and
gets its name from once being rendered down to get oil from its fat
(as was the muttonbird). In the afternoon we’ll have some free
time to catch up, take an optional tour or continue birding and photographing
around the lodge. Some of the trails are especially noted for their
birds, and we’ll be taking advantage of these throughout our
stay.
Day 8
- Rio Claro Natural Reserve
A full day today of wildlife searching, including mammals, birds,
reptiles and anything else we can find. We’ll try to operate
at an easy pace, to allow plenty of time for observation and photography.
Day 9

on the way we’ll stop at Guarinocito Lake to take pictures of
this beautiful location. We overnight in Bogota.
