TRINIDAD
& TOBAGO
We
are heading for Trinidad & Tobago in November this year. A new
destination for us, and we're very excited about it. It's been long
on our radar, and now finally in sight.
It's 10 days and 9 nights, with 6 of those nights on Trinidad, 2 on
Tobago (but we have long days arrival and departure) and one at the
Port of Spain airport which allows us to catch morning flights to
enable home city connections once back in the US.
SHORT
ITINERARY
D1: Fly to Trinidad
for 6 nights at Asa Wright Nature Centre.
D2: birding the grounds. One night, TBD, we’ll
go on a nightbirds outing off-site, and most nights we’ll spotlight
around our lodge.
D3: Walk to the Oilbird cave then late afternoon/sunset
travel to Caroni Swamp. In addition to the mangrove, light forest
and marsh birds we’ll take a boat ride to enjoy sunset (and
those rum punches!) as perhaps hundreds of
Scarlet Ibis fly in to their night roost.
D4: Aripo Savannah & Arena Forest – we’ll
spend much of the day out today, including in the savannah habitat
once widespread in Trinidad but now severely depleted
D5: We journey to the higher elevation forest, where
we drive and walk back roads and wide forest tracks. An easy day with
lunch out, but back in plenty of time for more verandah time.
D6: Another day on the grounds, but with an optional
half
day outing to a farm for viewing and photographing (from blinds) hummingbirds
or a very early start morning outing specifically for Trinidad Piping
Guan.
D7: we take a short flight across to Tobago this
morning, and transfer to Cuffie River Retreat, arriving before lunch.
The afternoon is devoted to exploring the grounds .
D8: Head to Gilpin Trace Reserve, continually protected
forest since 1776. We spend a couple of hours birding here, looking
especially for White-tailed Sabrewing and Blue-backed Manakin. We
then continue on to the coast and head across by glass-bottomed boat
to Little Tobago. Red-billed Tropicbirds, Red-footed and Brown Boobies
nest here in November, and are `our target birds, and there are plenty
of others as well. After time on the island we return to Cuffie.
D9: Most of the day is spent around Cuffie until
late afternoon when we head to the airport to fly back To Port of
Spain. We overnight here, convenient to the airport for our morning
flights tomorrow which enable connections to our home cities.
D10: Fly back to our home cities.
We have restricted the
group size to just 8. Departure date is November 19, 2017. Cost is
$2588 ex Port of Spain and includes all meals from arrival until lunch
Day 9, accommodation on a twin share basis (single accommodation may
be available), evening verandah drinks, tours and guiding (other than
2 optional tours), island transfers, inter-island flights and boat
ride, entries. Flights to and from Port of Spain are not included.
